Have your say….Shaping the Future of NewcastleGateshead One Core Strategy and Urban Core Action Plan Consultation

Gateshead and Newcastle Councils are currently out for consultation on two draft strategic planning documents.  These are the joint One Core Strategy and Urban Core Area Action Plan.

The One Core Strategy sets out the vision, strategic objectives and key policies relating to economy, retail, environment, transport, health, sustainable communities (including new housing provision) and climate change for delivering future development across Gateshead and Newcastle until 2030.

In addition the Urban Core Area Action Plan (UCAAP) will set out the spatial strategy for the future of the urban core of NewcastleGateshead and its function at the heart of the city region. This will be a twenty year strategy for change.

Further details on both plans can be found here along with instructions on how to make comments on the plans.  There is also more information available by reading the Lemington Core Strategey factsheet  (pdf 5.37MB)

Lemington ward

Historic Lemington

Now part of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Lemington and Bells Close began as separate villages on the banks of the Tyne. This was the highest point of the river suitable for staithes and records from 1638 show the Lamendon Staith serving the old turnpike road here. In the eighteenth century a network of waggonways developed to bring coal from pits at Wylam, Lemington, Newburn, Blucher and North Walbottle for export.

The area then underwent rapid industrialisation. The iron works and the iconic glassworks’ cones dominated the landscape and brickworks and boatyards flourished at Bell’s Close.

The strong link between the river, the local mines and the industries they supplied  attracted many workers and Lemington quickly grew, encouraged by the coming of the railway in 1875. Up along the valley side, rows of terrace houses, shops, churches and schools created a thriving community. The power stations Stella North and South operated here from 1935 and the village continued to spread up to the Roman Wall and the old Roman road now called Hospital Lane but known locally as Piggies Lonnen.

A free publication, 'Around & About Lemington – a local area heritage guide’ is available from the Ward Coordinator. There is a local Lemington Heritage Group which meets on a regular basis. Why not come along and share your experiences of living in Lemington, you will be assured of a warm welcome! Contact the Ward Coordinator for further details.
